Hjálparfoss waterfall

Hjálparfoss will be the first stop on our journey, welcoming us with its breathtaking beauty. This unique double waterfall cascades gracefully into a crystal-clear pond, creating a serene and picturesque setting. Surrounded by rugged lava formations, Hjálparfoss is a hidden gem in Iceland’s dramatic landscape, offering visitors a glimpse into the country’s raw and untouched nature.

The waterfalls flow over short cliffs composed of striking basaltic columns, a testament to Iceland’s powerful volcanic history. The contrast between the dark basalt and the shimmering water makes for an unforgettable sight. Whether bathed in summer's golden light or framed by winter’s icy beauty, Hjálparfoss is a must-see destination that sets the perfect tone for an incredible adventure through Iceland’s natural wonders.

Ruins of Stöng Longhouse

Here begins the cultural aspect of our tour. Stöng is a remarkably well-preserved ruin of a Viking longhouse, abandoned in 1104. Strangely enough, the very event that led to its evacuation is also what ensured its remarkable preservation.

The eruption of the nearby Hekla volcano forced the inhabitants to flee, covering the settlement in volcanic ash. Over the centuries, this natural blanket protected the ruins, keeping them intact. It wasn't until 1929 that archaeologists, conducting research in the area, unearthed these ancient structures, revealing a fascinating glimpse into Viking history.

Gjáin

Among the rugged, dark, volcanic landscapes stands a hidden gem, an oasis known as Gjáin. This enchanting valley contrasts sharply with the surrounding barren terrain, offering a lush and magical escape into Iceland’s untouched beauty.

In Gjáin, a short descent down a few steps takes us into a world of vibrant greenery. Flowing streams and torrents of water weave through the landscape, leading us to two breathtaking waterfalls. This secluded paradise feels like stepping into a fairytale, making it one of the most stunning and serene spots in Iceland.

Háifoss & Granni

One of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland, Háifoss, lives up to its name, which literally means 'The High Waterfall'. Plunging 122 meters into the Fossá River, this awe-inspiring cascade is a true natural wonder.

Right next to it, you’ll find another spectacular waterfall—Granni, meaning 'neighbor'. The panoramic views of these twin waterfalls carving through million-year-old bedrock are simply breathtaking. On sunny days, rainbows dance across the mist, adding even more magic to the scene.

For those seeking adventure, an optional 8 km hike (round trip) takes you to the bottom of Háifoss, offering a closer look at its immense power and beauty.
