Elephant Rock

One of the most iconic landmarks of the Westman Islands, the majestic Elephant Rock, rises dramatically from the ocean. This breathtaking rock formation, shaped like a giant elephant dipping its trunk into the sea, is a true natural wonder that captivates visitors with its striking resemblance and raw beauty.

After a short walk from the parking lot, we’ll pause to admire this stunning coastal panorama. During the summer months, the cliffs surrounding Elephant Rock become a lively habitat for dozens of puffins and other seabird species, offering an incredible opportunity for birdwatching in one of Iceland’s most picturesque settings.

Hike to Eldfell volcano

The highlight of our day is a short yet rewarding hike to the active Eldfell volcano. This 3.2 km round-trip trail is relatively easy and offers a unique opportunity to walk on volcanic terrain. Once at the summit, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the entire Westman Islands, a sight that is truly unforgettable.

Eldfell last erupted in 1973, forcing the overnight evacuation of the entire town of Heimaey. Even decades later, remnants of this dramatic event are still visible across the island, providing a fascinating glimpse into Iceland’s powerful volcanic history. This hike is not just about the stunning scenery—it’s a journey through one of Iceland’s most remarkable natural and historical sites.

Eldheimar museum

To conclude this remarkable day, we will visit the Eldheimar Museum, a site dedicated to the volcanic history of the Westman Islands. Throughout the day, your guide will have shared the stories of the two major eruptions that shaped the archipelago in the 20th century, offering insight into the immense power of Iceland’s volcanoes.

The first eruption, Surtsey in 1963, gave birth to a brand-new island, while the second, Eldfell in 1973, forced the evacuation of Heimaey overnight. The museum is built around a house that was excavated from the lava field, preserving a haunting yet fascinating glimpse into the past, where nature and history collide in an unforgettable way.
