Iceland Ring Road itinerary in late May with midnight sun and open roads

11-Day Iceland Ring Road Itinerary for Late May

Julien June 9, 2026 12 min

Late May is the sweet spot for an Iceland Ring Road itinerary. The roads are fully open, daylight runs close to round the clock, the puffins are back on the eastern cliffs, and the summer crowds have not yet arrived. What follows is a real 11-day private route we built and ran at the end of May, from the day our travellers landed to the morning they flew home. Every hotel and every activity is listed exactly as it happened, so you can use it as a blueprint or as a starting point for something of your own.

It suits a couple or a small party who want the whole loop without rushing it, who like a mix of headline sights and quieter corners, and who would rather sleep in good hotels than chase budget beds.

Quick overview

  • Length: 11 days, 10 nights
  • Season: Late May into early June (this run was 27 May to 6 June)

  • Start and finish: Keflavík Airport and Reykjavík
  • Style: Private driver-guide and vehicle throughout

Day 1: Arrival and the Blue Lagoon

A private transfer from Keflavík runs straight to The Retreat at Blue Lagoon, one of the most exclusive places to stay in the country and a five-minute walk from the famous geothermal water. The rest of the day is yours to unwind, with unlimited access to the private Retreat Spa and the main Blue Lagoon. After a long flight it is the gentlest possible landing.

Overnight: The Retreat at Blue Lagoon, Suite, breakfast included.

Day 2: The Reykjanes Peninsula

You meet your driver-guide and spend the day on Reykjanes, the volcanic peninsula that most visitors drive past on their way out of the airport. Stops include the Bridge Between Continents, which spans the rift between the North American and Eurasian plates, the steaming Gunnuhver hot springs, the Reykjanesviti lighthouse, the seabird cliffs at Krýsuvíkurberg, the deep blue Kleifarvatn lake, and the coloured mud pools of Seltún. Conditions permitting, you can also walk out to the fresh lava from Fagradalsfjall, which has erupted several times since 2021. For the full picture of the region, see our Ultimate Reykjanes Peninsula Guide.

Day 3: The Golden Circle and a farm table

The classic Golden Circle, done at a private pace. Þingvellir National Park, where the continental plates pull apart and the old parliament once met. Then the Geysir geothermal field, where Strokkur fires every few minutes, and the broad two-tier drop of Gullfoss. Lunch is a farm-to-table experience at a working Icelandic farm, the kind of stop that turns a sightseeing day into something you remember.

Overnight: ION Adventure Hotel, Deluxe room, breakfast included.

Day 4: The south coast

A waterfall day along the south coast. You walk behind the curtain of Seljalandsfoss, stand under the wide face of Skógafoss, and reach the black sand and basalt columns of Reynisfjara near Vík. From there the landscape opens out toward the Vatnajökull glacier, with the road running between ocean and ice. You can read the full route in our private South Coast tour, and the full set of stops in our 25 best waterfalls in Iceland guide.

Overnight: Hotel Jökulsárlón, breakfast included.

Day 5: Glacier lagoon and the eastern fjords

Vatnajökull National Park is the centrepiece today. At Jökulsárlón, icebergs calve off the glacier and drift across the lagoon, then wash up on the black sand of Diamond Beach next door. A photo stop follows at the foot of Vestrahorn, one of the most striking mountains in the country, before the road climbs into the first of the eastern fjords.

Overnight: Fosshotel Eastfjords, Superior room, breakfast included.

Day 6: The eastern fjords and puffins

A slow day along the winding fjord roads, with stops wherever the view earns it. The afternoon ends at the harbour of Borgarfjörður Eystri, where the puffins nest close enough to watch them land, take off and squabble at arm’s length. It is the easiest puffin viewing in Iceland, and you can read more on the season in our puffins have returned article. With time to spare, you can add the basalt canyon of Stuðlagil and the cascade of Rjúkandafoss on the way.

Overnight: Fjalladýrð at Möðrudalur, the highest and most remote farm in the country. The rooms are simple and comfortable, the food is excellent and local, and the setting is hard to match. Breakfast included.

Day 7: Mývatn and whale watching at Húsavík

The Mývatn region looks like another planet. You walk among the lava pillars of Dimmuborgir, cross the steaming Leirhnjúkur lava field, stand over the roaring fumaroles of Námaskarð, and look down into the Hverfjall crater. In the late afternoon you continue north to Húsavík, the whale-watching capital of Iceland, for a boat trip with Gentle Giants out into Skjálfandi bay. The whole region is covered in detail in our Ultimate North Iceland Guide.

Overnight: Fosshotel Mývatn, Junior Suite with lake view, breakfast included.

Day 8: Goðafoss and the long road west

A morning at Goðafoss, the waterfall of the gods, then on to Akureyri, the capital of the north, before the drive west across the top of the country. Stops happen as the mood takes you. The day finishes with a private soak at the Húsafell Canyon Baths, a set of warm pools tucked into a canyon and booked just for your group. Plan an early dinner, since most kitchens out here close around nine.

Day 9: The Silver Circle

A later start to recover from the previous day, then the Silver Circle through West Iceland. You go underground into Víðgelmir, one of the largest lava tubes in the country, see the spring-fed cascades of Hraunfossar, and stand beside Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in Europe. Late in the day you drive back to Reykjavík.

Day 10: Reykjavík at your own pace

A free day in the capital. The historic centre, the Hallgrímskirkja church, the waterfront and the Harpa concert hall, and the shops and restaurants along Laugavegur and Skólavörðustígur. We hand over personal recommendations based on what you are into, whether that is food, design, history or just a quiet last day.

Overnight: Hotel Borg, Tower Suite, breakfast included.

Day 11: Departure

A private transfer back to Keflavík, timed to your flight.

When this route works best

Late May and early June give you almost endless daylight, which means longer days on the road without the rush. The ring road is fully open by then, the puffins have returned to the eastern cliffs, and whale watching in the north is at its best. You will not see the northern lights this time of year, the sky never gets dark enough, so this is a route for landscapes, wildlife and long golden evenings rather than aurora. Pack layers, a waterproof shell and proper shoes. The weather changes fast even in summer, and several of these stops involve short walks over lava or wet ground.

FAQ

Is late May a good time to drive the Iceland Ring Road? Yes. The full ring road is open by late May, daylight runs close to 21 hours, the puffins have returned to the east, and whale watching in the north is at its best. Crowds are also still well below the July and August peak.

Can you see the northern lights on a Ring Road trip in May? No. By late May the sky never gets dark enough for the aurora to be visible, even on clear nights. A May trip is for landscapes, wildlife and long golden evenings rather than northern lights.

How many days do you need to drive the full Ring Road in Iceland? Seven days is the minimum to complete the loop without rushing. Ten to eleven days is the sweet spot, since it leaves room for the Reykjanes Peninsula, the Golden Circle, the Silver Circle and the east fjords without long driving days.

What is the best direction to drive the Ring Road, clockwise or counterclockwise? Both work, but clockwise from Reykjavík is preferred in late May. It puts the south coast and the glacier lagoon early in the trip when energy is highest, and saves the long western drive home for the back end.

Can this itinerary be customized? Yes. This is a sample built from a real trip we operated. Every Lilja Tours itinerary is private and designed from scratch, so dates, hotels, pace and activities can all be adapted to your preferences and travel style.
