Description of your tour to Viking History and less-traveled Waterfalls

You will typically begin your journey in Reykjavík, although, pickups are also available in Selfoss, Hveragerði, and Flúðir.

This tour will take place in the region of Thjórsárdalur (Þjórsárdalur). It has been thought and designed to give you a comprehensive experience and discovery of Iceland.

Indeed, on this day, you will get to travel far away from the biggest crowds and explore roads that only bigger vehicles can drive on. Also, you will visit among the most beautiful waterfalls in a country that counts over 10 000 of them and learn about Viking history, both through an archeological site and an exhibition. Should you wish, the day will end with a dinner in Ingólfskáli, a Viking theme restaurant, with the finest and most delightful cuisine.

Highlights of your private Jeep Tour:

Hjálparfoss

Our first stop will be a wonderful double waterfall in Þjórsárdalur

Stöng

These archeological remains were found and excavated in 1939. There are the ruins of a Viking Longhouse, which was part of a settlement of about 22 farms. It is nowadays covered with a modern roof for conservation purposes.

Gjáin

In the middle of dark, sandy, rocky, beautiful moon-like desertic landscapes, Gjáin stands as an oasis, with waterfalls and lush (Icelandic standards) vegetation. Ideal for a picnic stop.

Háifoss & Granni

Coming from an immense and amazing Canyon are two waterfalls. Háifoss is among the tallest waterfalls in Iceland. In fact, Háifoss means “The High Waterfall”.

There, you will take a hike down to the bottom of the waterfall.

Þjóðveldisbærinn

This museum is a reconstruction of what historians and archeologists think that Stöng (The ruins of the longhouse that we will have visited earlier) looked like when it was inhabited. We will visit its interior, perfectly built and decorated according to history.

Therefore, we recommend that you take with you proper footwear and weatherproof clothes.

There will be no restaurants on the routes that we will be taking. In that regard, it is important that you bring a picnic / packed lunch / snacks and water with you.

This tour does not present any difficulties and does not require any specific level of fitness. Although, the visit to stöng will include:

  • 15-20 minutes walk on steep, but paved and even terrain.

This tour is thought and designed with the idea to have dinner in a viking restaurant at the end of the day. Although, we do not do the booking by default, and we will reach out to you to confirm that you are interested.
