A journey to all the wonders of the Icelandic South Coast

The South Coast of Iceland is famous for its glaciers and waterfalls. But it is also the home of some of the most powerful volcanoes in the country.

Even though you cannot really distinguish them at first sight, as they are hidden under glaciers, traces of their past eruptions are everywhere. Black sand beaches and deserts are visible all along the south coast of Iceland.

Therefore, the whiteness of the glaciers contrasts with the darkness of the volcanic ashes, and this black and white canvas is only enhanced by the blue of the ocean and the green of the vegetation. It is really the colors of the South Coast of Iceland that create unique landscapes, in Iceland, but also in the world.

Description of the private tour of the South Coast of Iceland

Here is an outline of the program, depending on timing, we might be able to add extra visits:

  • Your guide will pick you up at your hotel at 8:00 am
  • We will drive about one and a half hours for a coffee stop and refreshments.
  • A full day to discover some of the most famous landmarks of Iceland, at your own rhythm.
  • Drive back to Reykjavik and drop off at your hotel.

Highlights of the day:

Waterfall: Seljalandsfoss

A 60m high, wonderful waterfall. With a cave conveniently located at the back of the waterfall, you can walk behind it and all the way around.

Skógafoss Waterfall

Just as Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss is 60m tall, but much more powerful. Unlike Seljalandsfoss, one should not walk behind. Although, the legend says that a giant hid a treasure behind the waterfall!

This waterfall has been featured in both series: Vikings and Game of Thrones

The Black Sand Beach: Reynisfjara

The most famous Black Sand Beach in Iceland. It is the home of a small puffin colony, and displays incredible geological features, among which: Sea stacks and basaltic columns.

It is also a Game of Thrones location. Remember the Dragon Glass Cave?

Dyrhólaey

The island of Dyrhólaey has been created about 80 000 years ago, because of a submarine volcanic eruption. Thousands of years of erosion have sculpted the cliffs into incredible patterns. Dyrhólaey is also the home of a small puffin colony

The panoramas from the top of the island are the most beautiful sights that we will have on this tour.

This sometimes might not be accessible in the winter time. We would then replace it with another visit.

Glacier: Sólheimajökull

The unique feature of this glacier is to be partially covered with volcanic ashes. We will get close to it and gaze at its beauty. We also offer a South Coast and Glacier Hike Tour, that includes a hike on the glacier

What to know before you go and bring with you

Weather conditions in Iceland:

It is important to be aware that weather conditions in Iceland can change very quickly and can get very windy and rainy in some occurrences. This statement is mostly true in winter, but it is also the case in summer.

Therefore, we recommend that you take with you proper footwear and weatherproof clothes.

Walking during the tour:

This tour does not require any fitness level or condition, although one visit may include:

  • 10-15 minutes walk on rather flat and easy terrain + return.
