Description of your Private Tour to the Landmannalaugar
The road to Landmannalaugar
We will start our trip on paved roads, and take a few detours to see some breathtaking waterfalls. After the last one, we will be driving on mountain roads, and have to cross a few rivers to make our way to the Landmannalaugar. The drive and the detours we take are definitely part of your experience.
You will go to some of the most remote places in the country, where nobody lives. You will experience the true nature of Iceland.
The Landmannalaugar
The Landmannalaugar is located in the southern part of the highlands of Iceland, in a very volcanic area. With Rhyolite mountains, all-year snow, lava fields, black-sand mountains, and fumaroles, you will find the Landmannalaugar to be a very unique place. A unique place in Iceland for sure, but also a unique place in the world.
In the Landmannalaugar, you will find tens of hiking paths of variable difficulties, and a natural hot pool to take a dip in. Is it not paradise?
Highlights of the day:
Ljótipollur
A beautiful volcanic crater with a lake at its bottom, and an incredible display of colors. Ljótipollur means the “ugly puddle” which does not do it any justice.
Sigöldugljúfur
We will visit this wonderful canyon “The valley of tears”, on our way back from the Landmannalaugar
Hikes in The Landmannalaugar:
We can choose between different hiking paths when we are in the Landmannalaugar. Some of them being more challenging than others. Below are a few suggestions, we usually do two of them as they can all be connected together. The best is always to talk with your guide, see how you feel, what the weather is like, then decide what path is the best for you.
Bláhnúkur
When you arrive in the Landmannalaugar, you will see a dark grey mountain overlooking all the others. This is Bláhnúkur. It is the most challenging hike, but offer gorgeous views over the whole area.
Brennisteinsalda
The second mountain that will draw your attention after Bláhnúkur is Brennisteinsalda. It is a multicolored mountain with a tall rock hanging onto it. The hike to the top is a little bit easier than the Bláhnúkur one, but the most experienced hikers will appreciate combining both!
Grænagíl / Laugahraun
For those who fear to hike on elevated terrain, a low-level hike on flat ground is available. It takes you through a green gorge and an impressive lava fields, with panoramas over the area
Access to the Icelandic Highlands
Iceland is the country with the lowest density of population in Europe, with about 80% of the country being uninhabited. If 11% of Iceland is covered with glaciers, most of the rest of the uninhabited land is located in the middle of the country and is called: The Highlands.
Most of the year, the highlands are deemed inaccessible, with mountain roads, called F-Roads, being only open during the summer months. From “some time” in June to “some time” in September, depending on the weather conditions that can vary a lot between years.
With sandy, rocky roads, cut by unbridged rivers and with low maintenance service, even in the summertime, you need an appropriate vehicle and an experienced driver. In some cases, you will even need a modified Super Jeep.
Fortunately, we have the perfect vehicle to take you on such roads and give you access to the very remote and most certainly beautiful Icelandic Highlands.
Our 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser has been specially rigged for your adventures in the Icelandic Highlands. Lifted and mounted on 33-inch tires, it can go to the roughest terrains, and with a snorkel on the side, is perfectly equipped for river crossings. All this with the comfort of a modern car.
Included in the Private Jeep Tour:
- Professional guide and driver
- Comfortable modified vehicle
- Parking fees
- Transportation to/from Reykjavík
Not included in the Private Jeep Tour:
- Food, snacks, water
- Personal equipment
What to know before you go and bring with you on this Private Hiking Tour to the Landmannalaugar
Weather in the Icelandic Highlands
If the weather in Iceland can change very quickly, it is even truer in the Highlands. Therefore, we recommend that you wear weatherproof clothes.
If this is obviously true for those who are planning on doing some hiking on this tour, it is actually also true for the sightseeing part.
Also please note that the temperatures are always colder and dropping faster in the Highlands.
We also recommend that you take a packed lunch with you, as we will not find any restaurants on our way.
Personalization of the tour
As previously mentioned this tour has the potential to be a very flexible day, and your guide will adapt to what you want to do.
Although, if there are already some places that you know for sure you want to visit, do not hesitate to let us know in advance, to make sure that we can accommodate you.
