South Coast And Northern Lights Private Tour

Between glaciers, waterfalls, and volcanos, visiting the South Coast of Iceland is, in itself, an experience that will leave you in awe. But once the night has come, we will take it up a notch to hopefully show you the absolute best spectacle the arctic skies can give you: The Aurora Borealis.

The Icelandic South Coast

The South Coast of Iceland is a land of contrasts. The glaciers are white, and the beaches black. On Sólheimajökull, the dark volcanic ashes are even lying on the white ice.

This black-and-white setting is only altered by the blue of the ocean, and the green of the moss, lichens, and pastures. The glaciers are always nearby on the South Coast, and so are volcanoes. In some occurrences, volcanoes are actually resting under the glaciers, adding more sense of contrast in a country called “The Land of Fire and Ice”.

The Northern Lights Hunt

To end an already delightful day with a special note, we will go for aurora hunting in the evening. Your guide will have checked what would be the best location for the Northern Lights to be visible, according to the weather forecasts.

After he has made a few (and hopefully fruitful) phone calls to the old Nordic gods, the skies will begin to brighten. Sun-blown particles, after traveling over 150 millions km through space, will gracefully dance on Earth’s magnetosphere, right over your head.

South Coast and Northern Lights: Program outline

  • Your guide will pick you up around 10:30 am in the morning
  • Your day will then be dedicated to visiting the highlights of the Icelandic South Coast
  • Your dinner location will be determined by your guide, depending on weather forecasts, and where is the best area to see the Northern Lights.
  • Aurora hunting usually lasts until midnight to 1 am, but this can vary depending on the season, the weather forecasts, and the Northern Lights activity.

South Coast and Northern Lights Private tour: Highlights of the day

Seljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss is a magnificent, 60 m tall waterfall. Its particularity is the cave located behind it.

Be ready to walk behind and around a waterfall.

Skógafoss

A waterfall as beautiful as powerful.

Legend says that a giant hid a treasure behind the waterfall. You can see Skógafoss both from above and from ground level. When seeing it from above offers you a wide panorama, it is from the ground that you will get a chance to feel all its might.

Sólheimajökull

Sólheimajökull is a glacier outlet coming down from the glacier of Mýrdalsjökull. In front of it is a lake with floating icebergs all year long.

Reynisfjara

Reynisfjara is the most beautiful black sand beach in Iceland. Impressive rolling waves, panoramas over glaciers and Dýrhólaey, caves, basaltic columns, bird life.

Reynisfjara has it all. Probably it has been picked as a filming location for Game Of Thrones.

Aurora Hunting

If you have chosen to come to Iceland in wintertime, Northern Lights must be on your bucket list. This is a natural phenomenon only visible under extreme latitudes, that even locals never get tired of.

For most of our visitors, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

What to know before you go and bring with you:

For our sightseeing part of the day, no difficulty is to be expected. Paths are easy and no long walk is on schedule. However, as always in Iceland, and especially in the winter time, it is important to be ready for all kinds of weather, and wear weatherproof clothes with proper footwear.

Our arctic nights get very cold. Watching the Northern Lights involves standing outside and looking at the sky. Therefore it is important to wear warm clothes.
