A brief history of Fagradalsfjall, Meradalir, And Litli Hrútur on the Reykjanes Peninsula

Iceland is home of around 30 active volcanic systems. In fact, this is the most volcanic island on the planet. Fortunately, although active, not all these volcanoes are erupting.

The peninsula of Reykjanes, located in the southwestern part of Iceland, is part of the North-Atlantic ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are drifting apart. Therefore, this is the youngest part of the country and after no eruptions in hundreds of years, the peninsula “woke up” on the 19th of march 2021.

This was the first eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcano since 6000 years, and it lasted for approximately 6 months. On the 3rd of August 2022, it happened again, in Meradalir but, as it turned out, this one only lasted for 3 weeks. And again, another eruption occurred, the 10th of July 2023, and this one lasted for 4 weeks.

Description of this private hiking tour

Welcome to an amazing day. We will take you on a hiking journey to a steaming lava field that is only a few months old.

Even if there is no longer molten lava visible at the surface, the hike is absolutely fantastic. Imagine seeing rocks that did not exist before March 2021, and that is for the oldest ones of them. Once you get to the top of the hills, you are overlooking a steaming lava field as big as a major airport, several valleys, and the ocean, all that at the same time.

This is by far one of the best hiking day tours one can do from Reykjavík.

  • Your guide will pick you up at your hotel at a pre-agreed time
  • Drive to the volcanic site takes around 45 minutes from Reykjavík.
  • Beginning of the hike: About 3 hours to reach the third eruption site.
  • Volcano gazing and picture time!
  • Hiking back to the car should also take around 2 hours
  • Drive back to Reykjavik and drop off at your hotel

What to know before you go and bring with you on this private hiking tour

What to know about the hike:

Because providing good and appropriate information is the first step to guaranteeing a safe and enjoyable experience:

The hike is about 20km return, (a little bit under 13 miles) and you will have to walk on steep slopes, about 300m of elevation. It means that the hike to the volcano is slightly challenging. In other words, it is challenging but perfectly doable by anybody with hiking experience and in good condition. However, it is also a little bit more difficult during the wintertime.

The area where the hike takes place, although not far from the road, is known for having mountain-like weather conditions. Therefore, you must be prepared and equipped for all kinds of weather. Here is the list of equipment we recommend:

  • Proper hiking boots.
  • Warm clothes, but most importantly: windproof and rainproof clothes. On you or in your backpack
  • Plenty of water
  • Food and snacks
  • Beanie, gloves etc …
  • (Optional) Hiking poles

Weather conditions and cancellation

The visit to the volcano is totally weather dependent. Subsequently, Lilja Tours ehf. might cancel the tour and provide a refund if:

  • Weather conditions make it unsafe to hike in the area
  • The guide assesses that the customer is not properly equipped for the hike. Safety first.

Personalize the tour

You want to see the volcano straight after you landed? Let us know, we will arrange a solution with an airport pickup. We can also combine the hike with a visit at the Blue Lagoon. These are just examples, please, send us an email at the following address: julien@lilja-tours.com for any personalization.
