Explore Reykjanes, the home of many active volcanic systems
The Reykjanes Peninsula is the youngest part of Iceland. Entirely located on the fissure between the North American tectonic Plate and the Eurasian tectonic plate, many active volcanoes can be found there.
One recently got very famous after erupting 3 times in 3 years: The volcano of Fagradalsfjall.
During this tour, we will visit boiling hot springs perpetually steaming which remind you of the incredible activity beneath your feet. But mainly, we will hike the 20 km trail that will take us to the sites of the most recent eruptions.
Even if the eruptions are now over, (although we are expecting more in the days? weeks? months? maybe years? to come) the freshly solidified lava fields are still steaming as some hot, liquid, lava is still flowing below the hardened crust.
This tour is a combination of our tour: Colors of Reykjanes and our Volcano Hike Tour
Description of the tour
Below is an outline of our day plan:
- Your pickup will be early in the morning
- We will begin with some sightseeing
- Then comes the hiking time. The hike is 20km return, it takes approximately 6 hours to complete
- After the hike, we will proceed to some visits on our way back.
Highlights of the day:
The bridge between continents
The only bridge in the world between America and Europe. A great place to understand why Iceland is such a volcanic island.
Gunnuhver Hot Spring
A powerful hot spring, with a cloud of steam visible kilometers away. Gunnuhver reminds you of the constant volcanic activity of the area.
Hike to Fagradalsfjall
The best part of the day. A 20km hike above the freshest volcanic landscapes.
The hike offers panoramas over all the surrounding valleys, the ocean, and of course, fresh lava fields and new craters. A hike to remember.
Seltún Hot Spring
Located very close to Fagradalsfjall, Seltún actually belongs to a different volcanic system. Between boiling mud pots and bubbling waters, you can find the remains of some old sulfur mines.

What to know before you go and bring with you
About the Icelandic weather
The weather changes quickly in Iceland. Especially in the area of Fagradalsfjall where we will be hiking for several hours.
Therefore, it is mandatory to have weatherproof clothes with you and proper sturdy hiking boots.
About the hike itself
The hike is nothing extreme, with no exposed terrain, yet, it is a long one, with some elevation. We do not recommend it if this is your first hike ever of if you are not in good physical condition.
The hike is 20km long but is not a loop. We go back the same way. It allows us to turn back easily if the hike turns out to be too hard for you.
If you have any doubts about your ability to do this hike, please let us know, and we will discuss it together and advise accordingly. For example, we can only hike to the first eruption site and do more visits to the peninsula.
Personalize the tour
As mentioned above, the hike can be shortened, should you wish so. If this is the case, we will find options to fill the day and make it memorable to you.
Among other things, we can recommend finishing the day with soaking in the hot waters of the Blue Lagoon!
